The Poor Knights Islands are the remains of a group of ancient volcanoes. Beneath the waves these volcanoes have been hollowed and shaped by the ocean into a web of caves, tunnels and cliffs which Jacques Cousteau rated as one of the top ten dives in the world.Because of their incredible form and biodiversity, the sea surrounding the islands has been a marine reserve since 1981. The Great Barrier has a diversity of rich underwater life fed by the East Auckland Current which travels south through the famous Poor Knights and Mokohinau Islands, reaching the 23 islands making up the Great Barrier. MOKOHINAU ISLANDS

The Mokohinau Islands (called Pokohinu by Maori) are a taonga (treasure) with many special places. National reserves like the Mokohinau protect natural, historic and cultural heritage for all New Zealanders, and help safeguard the biodiversity of the planet.

The tangata whenua of the Mokohinau, Ngati Rehua, hapu of Ngati Wai, have a spiritual, cultural and historical relationship with their taonga. Boat Trip Cost are,

ALDERMAN ISLANDS

The Aldermen Islands are a small group of rocky islets to the southeast of Mercury Bay. They are located off the coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, 20 kilometers east of the mouth of the Tairua River.

GOAT ISLAND (Leigh)

The Cape Rodney to Okakari Point marine reserve is better known as the Goat Island marine reserve or Leigh Marine reserve. Since its creation in 1975, and official opening in 1977, it has been used extensively for scientific research, has helped as a training ground for diving and has inspired many people who come to this magical place to enjoy the friendly fishes. Many schools come here each year to introduce students to the marvels and mysteries of our marine environment.

MERCURY ISLANDS

Cradled in the seclusion of the Pacific Ocean lies Great Mercury Island. This privately owned island offers a tranquil ambiance in luxury surroundings, yet remains completely unspoiled in its pristine natural state. Atop the rolling hillsides are panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, including white sandy beaches, rugged coastlines and native bush headlands.
